Southern African Art and Art History

Basel

 


 

Most of the extensive archives on Southern African art and art history which had been assembled by “The Haenggi Foundation Inc.”, Johannesburg / Basel, covering the period 1946 to 2011 were donated freely to the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Southern Africa Library) (BAB), part of the Carl Schlettwein Foundation, during 2014.

 


 

These include the following archives

 

1390 Artists’ files - S.A. artists: White: 1213 and S.A. artists: Black:177

Files on “Art News” and “Group Shows” covering the period 1946 to 2011, year by year

“Art and Art Education News from Southern Africa” - files covering the period 1960s to 2014 under the Categories: S.A. Art News General, Tribal, African Music, Schools + Art Centres, Crafts, Universities, Museums, Other Public Collections, Auction News S.A., Galleries

 

Amanda Anne JEPHSON archives relating to her MA on "Aspects of Twentieth Century Black South African Art up to 1980" from 1989

 

 

 

In support, BAB also received freely a substantial archive on books and other publications relating to Southern African art and art history

Numerous illustrated auction catalogues from

Bonham’s London, Strauss & Co., Johannesburg and Cape Town, Welz / Sothebys and Stephan Welz & Co., Johannesburg and Cape Town, relating to South African art.

 

 

 

Researchers in these fields may access the physical records kept by BAB as a research unit by prior arrangement with BAB; however, additional data may not yet have been transferred to BAB (e.g. audio, video, email correspondence or larger files on specific artists and additional computer downloads). These can be obtained from Mr F.F. Haenggi by prior arrangement through BAB, as long as he is available.

The handing over of all remaining data to BAB is expected to be finalised by the end of 2017.
