Born in Biella (Vercelli) on 29th July, 1921 (the son of Giuseppe Buffa and Lea Casoni), obtained the diploma of the secondary professional vocational school in Biella, 1936, followed by studies at the Liceo Artistico, Bologna, from 1938 to 1940. As from 1953, Giovanni Buffa attended the four-year course of painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Bologna, obtaining the academic degree in 1957. He studied under Virgilio Guidi (painting), Giorgio Morandi and Manaresi (engraving). By 1958, Giovanni Buffa's oeuvre comprised about 50 etchings.
He participated in a number of important exhibitions as listed below.
